Updated Remarks by Ambassador Nersesyan on the Situation in Nagorno Karabakh and Armenia

"I would like to give you a quick update on Azerbaijan's aggression against Artaskh and Armenia. There has been serious aggravation of the situation. Today, October 2, 2020, Azerbaijan's Armed Forces targeted the capital of Artsakh Stepanakert with heavy artillery fire. Damage and civilian casualties are reported. Yesterday four Azerbaijani drones were shot down in Armenia's air space, near the capital city Yerevan. In addition it is now confirmed by multiple credible sources that Turkey has recruited and deployed a private mercenary army made of pro Turkish former Syrian rebels who are paid to fight Turkey's proxy war on the side of Azerbaijan against Armenia and Artsakh.

The events of the last two days mark a significant escalation in the war against Armenia and Artsakh. Turkey and Azerbaijan have completely ignored the international calls to stop the fighting. Without external pressure on Turkey and Azerbaijan to lay down their arms, this conflict will continue to spiral out of control. The only immediate path to peace is strong political and diplomatic intervention by the international community

The United States and the international community must intervene, to stop the aggression and prevent it from becoming a larger regional war. Until then, Armenia and Artsakh will defend themselves using all available means to repel the aggressor and silence its positions."
